As stated in the last post, I shall try to explain how and why certain characters speak in a specific manner. Most of my characters are Canadian, ergo North American and therefore, they speak in a manner in which most folks that might read this series speak daily.
However, there are Canadians whose first language is not English, it is French (There are many other languages spoken in Canada, but French is one of our two official languages). As a native of Montreal, I was bilingual at one time (some forty years ago) and hearing English spoken by French speaking people was very normal. But there is a cadence, a rhythm when I hear them speak and because of that, I have given my French speaking characters a pattern of speaking that while it is decidedly excellent for a second language, it hints of the way that their first language is spoken.
Then we come to Igor Kovaszic – our Slavic friend. As a matter of possible interest, his name is a product of my imagination. I wanted many consonants including a z and this is what came out. I based his speech pattern on my delightful mother-in-law, and he speaks phonetically. Sometimes when I write or read his words, I can hear her speak and it kindles many pleasant memories.
BB, aka Air Marshall Merlyn Blackburn, RAF Ret. is the quintessential patrician British gentleman. He has many secrets and some flaws, but his speech is utterly impeccable. You will never hear BB use a short cut – he enunciates every syllable. My friendships with those of British origin and having been in Britain, allowed me to observe some of the very “British” way of stating things and I used all that I could remember to construct BB’s speaking pattern.
So perhaps with this explanation, when you read the words spoken by the characters in the “Spy Series”, it is my hope that you can imagine how these characters might sound.
